11 Plus Tips

11 Plus Tips

The 11 plus exams can be one of the most nerve-wracking times of your child's journey: after all, they have worked for months preparing for this moment.

The night before the 11+ test is crucial for you.

Always be relaxed and confident. Remind yourself that tomorrow isn't the end of your life: it's an exciting opportunity!

Layout your clothes and double-check if you're recommended to wear the school uniform or not.

Get a perfect sleep. Don't take too much sugar contained food before bed, and stay away from mobiles early so your brain can take some rest. Try to read a good book to send you off to sleep.

The morning of the Eleven Plus Exam

Wake up early in the morning to give yourself time for your brain to charge up.

Try to have a healthy breakfast. Eat something that will release energy throughout the day. Something like nuts, oats, protein food or dry fruit must be consumed. You can even have porridge with some raisins, a few dried apricots, or a little poached egg.

Never talk too much before the exam, and try to be peaceful. Do a little bit of 11+ maths and fun, creative 11+ English to get your brain on the go, try to make up similes, for example.

Try to ensure you have everything you need, including two sharp pencils, a rubber and other things you mentioned to bring. If any break is allowed between papers, remember to take a drink and a snack. Bananas or even dark chocolate increase serotonin levels (release 'happy' chemicals and relieve stress.)

Points to be noted in the exam room

Before you open the test, wait and be confident, always say, 'I can pass this test!' Then, take some deep breaths to become mentally strong, wait for the rustling of everyone else's tests to pass, and start your exam.

Write all the equations or tips you've remembered at the top of the page on your exam paper, so you don't have to hold them in your head.

Breathe, slow down and don't rush. Your goal is to get all the questions that you can right – not to finish the test.

Don't waste time on difficult questions if you can't determine what the problem asks or what the answer might be quick.

Never answer the questions in order. Try the ones that you're confident with and do those first.

Don't worry if you don't finish when it comes to the 11 plus verbal and 11 plus non-verbal reasoning test. The examiners have given you more problems than you can do in the time given to be sure you don't run out.

Above all, have fun. Feel good knowing what you're doing and being excited about facing new puzzles and challenges.
